Former Oklahoma C Creed Humphrey Honored With Shawnee Super Bowl Celebration

Hundreds of locals gathered at Jim Thorpe Stadium in Shawnee to honor the town's newest Super Bowl champion on Saturday.

SHAWNEE — When Creed Humphrey heads back to Kansas City, he’ll have a key to his hometown and a holiday in his name.

The Super Bowl champion center of the Kansas City Chiefs returned home to Shawnee on Saturday afternoon for a day of celebration and recognition.

“I’m thankful for everyone who came out and supported me today,” Humphrey said after receiving his recognition. “It truly means the world to me — being able to be someone from Shawnee, being able to set an example for these younger kids around here in the city. It’s truly a blessing, and I just want to thank you all for coming out.

“Being from the city itself, it means so much to me. I have a lot of pride in being from Shawnee. I love it when I get to come back here and see everybody, a ton of familiar faces in the stadium right now.”

Humphrey graduated from Shawnee High School in 2017, where he starred on both the football field and the wrestling mat. He went on to play college football at the University of Oklahoma, where he was one of the best centers in the nation. Humphrey was named the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year in both 2019 and 2020 and took home All-Big 12 honors in both seasons.

He was selected by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft and immediately became a pillar on the offensive line, starting from Day One and earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie team in 2021. In 2022, Humphrey was voted to the Pro Bowl and earned a second-team spot on the AP All-Pro list.

“Definitely, the Super Bowl is up there, the AFC Championship is up there," Humphrey said when asked about his highlights. "The Big 12 Championships we won at OU, those are all up there. Those are the biggest things for me. Just being able to represent the team and do the best job I can for the team, that’s my biggest thing. That leads to a winning culture on a team, which leads to having success. That’s my main thing, making sure I’m doing the best I can for the team.”

Saturday’s celebration was for Humphrey’s impressive body of work that now includes a Super Bowl championship. He led the Chiefs' line in giving up zero sacks against the Philadelphia Eagles and was instrumental in Kansas City’s storybook season.

“It’s a blessing for sure," Humphrey said. "My home town honoring me like this, it’s truly a blessing. It’s something I dreamed about as a little kid, being able to go out and play in that stadium in high school. Then playing at OU was obviously a dream of mine, too. Making it to the NFL, winning a Super Bowl and all of this — it’s a dream come true. I’m still letting it set in and it’s been over two weeks now, it’s been awesome.”
