Former Oklahoma DL Finds New Home in the ACC

After spending three seasons with the Sooners, a former highly touted defensive line recruit has announced his next chapter.

On Thursday morning, former Oklahoma defensive lineman Kelvin Gilliam announced that he will transfer to Virginia Tech.

In his time with the Sooners, Gilliam tallied 10 tackles and half of a tackle for loss. The redshirt sophomore announced that was entering the transfer portal on Dec. 7 before announcing his commitment three weeks later.

Hailing from Highland Springs, VA, Gilliam was a 4-star recruit and was rated the No. 7 edge rusher in the country coming out of high school. Now 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds, Gilliam has developed into more of an interior defensive lineman.

While seeing a talented recruit leave the program is never ideal, the Sooners are well-equipped to handle Gilliam's departure. With Da'Jon Terry and Jacob Lacey both announcing their return to Norman and talented freshman like Jayden Jackson and David Stone set to enroll next semester, OU should have a solid defensive line, especially on the interior, as it enters the SEC.

Gilliam and edge rusher Reggie Grimes were the only defensive lineman from Oklahoma's 2023 team to enter the transfer portal so far. With one more game in the Sooners' season, a few more players could still enter the portal after the Alamo Bowl.
