Oklahoma’s favorite former quarterback has a new home.

Former OU signal caller and Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield has signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers worth up to $8.5 million, per multiple reports.

This marks the fourth different team for Mayfield in just the past couple of years, after being dealt from the Cleveland Browns to the Carolina Panthers prior to the 2022 season, and then being claimed on waivers by the Los Angeles Rams in the back end of last year.

Last season, in 12 games and 10 starts with the Panthers and Rams, he completed 60 percent of his passes for 2,163 yards and 10 touchdowns with eight interceptions.

His finish to the year with Los Angeles, though, is likely what has earned him potentially another shot at being a starting NFL quarterback.

In five games and four starts with the Rams, Mayfield completed 63.6 percent of his passes for 850 yards and four touchdowns, highlighted by an incredible comeback win against the Las Vegas Raiders without even a full practice and a Christmas Day demolition of the Denver Broncos.

There was some thought LA might look to retain him due to his success despite having a starter already in place with Matthew Stafford, but the Buccaneers have come calling potentially with a starting job up for grabs.

With future Hall of Famer Tom Brady retired, Tampa Bay was in the market for a new signal caller, and Mayfield looks to possibly be the man for the job.

In his five NFL seasons since the Browns made him the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield has four 3,000-yard seasons, including 2018, when he set the NFL rookie record with 27 touchdown passes, and 2021, when he played most of the season with a damaged left shoulder.

Mayfield’s career stats so far include 16,288 yards, 102 touchdowns and 64 interceptions to go with a .636 completion percentage, an 86.4 passer efficiency rating and a 65.5 QBR.

Mayfield was the Pro Football Writers Association NFL Rookie of the year, made the NFL All-Rookie Team, and is a three-time conference offensive player of the week.
