NORMAN — The Sooners had a well-earned weekend off.

Fresh off Oklahoma’s dramatic 34-30 win over Texas, Brent Venables’ team got a chance to heal up over the bye week.

OU slid back one spot in the AP Poll to No. 6, making room for Washington in the top five after the Huskies’ victory over Oregon. But Oklahoma will be back at the forefront of the conversation in college football when it takes the field against Big 12 newcomers UCF this Saturday.

There are plenty of connections between the Sooners (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) and the Knights (3-3, 0-3), as quarterback Dillon Gabriel will play against the Orlando outfit for the first time since transferring to Norman.

OU offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby will also be facing familiar opposition, as he worked with Gabriel under then-head coach Josh Heupel at UCF in 2019.

This season, Gus Malzahn’s Knights have struggled without starting quarterback John Rhys Plumlee, starting their Big 12 experience winless against Kansas State, Baylor and Kansas.

Venables’ team is sure to get a warm welcome back onto Owen Field, though the atmosphere may take a hit due to the early kickoff for the first ever meeting between the two schools.
