Oklahoma DB Commit Discusses Recruitment, Other 2024 Targets

After his commitment on Monday afternoon, Sooners' pledge Mykel Patterson-McDonald caught up with the media to discuss his recruitment and a number of other topics.

On Monday evening, 4-star Westmoore (OK) defensive back Mykel Patterson-McDonald committed to Oklahoma

The talented safety was an important target for more reasons than one. Patterson-McDonald's skill set will be a great addition to the Sooners' 2024 class, and the hard-hitting safety also has helpful connections that could aid OU in their pursuit of 5-star defensive lineman David Stone, and other talented prospects in the 2024 cycle.

After his commitment, Patterson-McDonald was asked about recruiting his childhood friends, Stone and Caden Durham

"(Recruiting Durham and Stone) is going to be something," Patterson-McDonald said following his announcement. "Caden is hard to read, David, I can get to him every now and then. But yeah, it's going to be a good next few weeks."

Durham announced his top three on Sunday, keeping Oklahoma, LSU and Texas A&M in the mix. Stone announced his top six earlier last week, with Texas A&M, Florida, Miami, Michigan State, Oregon and OU making the cut.

"(David Stone and I) have talked about this for awhile," Patterson-McDonald said when asked about the possibility of playing with the fellow Oklahoma City native in college. "Playing together since 8U, I met him 8U, Del City Eagles. We played together all the way up until 12U. We've been close ever since and we always talk about playing together."

Alongside Stone and Durham, Patterson-McDonald said that he also hoped to get a handful of other defensive prospects on board in the Sooners' 2024 class.

"Nigel Smith, Williams Nwaneri and Michael Boganowski," the Jaguars standout said when asked what other OU targets he was hoping to add to Oklahoma's class in the upcoming recruiting cycle.

Patterson-McDonald also talked extensively about his recruitment after his commitment, saying that the Sooners' staff made him feel at home on campus.

"They stayed in contact with me," Patterson-McDonald said. "Everyday, if it wasn't one coach it was another coach. Everytime they brought me out on campus they made me feel at home, they made me feel comfortable to be there."

The 4-star recruit also talked about his relationship with OU defensive back coaches Brandon Hall and Jay Valai, praising the two Oklahoma staff members.

"My relationship with Coach Hall and Coach Valai is very strong," Patterson-McDonald told reporters. "I love both of those coaches, they're both amazing coaches. You know, everytime I step in there, everytime I step in the office, all we do is talk ball. They always talk about how high my IQ is. I love both of those coaches, they're both amazing coaches and I look forward to being coached by both of them."

Patterson-McDonald joins 4-star cornerback Jeremiah Newcombe and fellow 4-star safety Jaydan Hardy in the Sooners' 2024 class. The Westmoore product said that he has a great relationship with Hardy, saying that the two talk often.

With three talented DBs verbally committed to OU in the upcoming recruiting cycle, Brent Venables and company have started to put together a very sold class on the defensive side of the ball.
