Oklahoma Earns Commitment from Nation's top Tight End
Davon Mitchell, the No. 1 tight end in the country according to ESPN and Rivals, has committed to OU.
The stellar pass catcher announced his decision on Saturday afternoon on Instagram Live.
"For the next three to four years, I will be taking my talents to the University of... Oklahoma," Mitchell said while putting on an Oklahoma hat.
Listed at 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, Mitchell chose the Sooners over Miami and Alabama, among others. While the Los Alamitos High School (CA) product was believed to be a Sooners lean for quite some time now, the Hurricanes were reportedly making a strong push for Mitchell after the 5-star visited Mario Cristobal and company in late June.
Despite Miami's best efforts, they were not able to wrestle California's No. 1 prospect away from the Sooners.
Mitchell visited Norman for the ChampU BBQ earlier in June, getting to campus at the beginning of the week and meeting with the Oklahoma coaching staff for multiple days. At one point, Mitchell was guided through Everest Training Center during the Brent Venables Elite Camp and was given the chance to meet legendary Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who was there with his sons, Cooper and CJ Witten.
Originally from Allen, TX, Mitchell moved to California after his sophomore year of high school. Regardless of what school the star tight end now goes to, landing a commitment from Mitchell is another huge victory for OU tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley.
As part of his commitment, Mitchell announced that he will be reclassifying to the 2024 recruiting cycle. Rated one of the top 20 players in the country according to ESPN and 247Sports, the stellar tight end is now the Sooners' 12th commitment in the 2024 class.
Mitchell will join Frisco Emerson (TX) quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. and a talented group of pass catchers in Oklahoma's 2024 class.
