Oklahoma finally has its first commitment in the 2024 recruiting class.

Jeremiah Newcombe, a cornerback from Casteel High School in Queen Creek, AZ, announced his verbal pledge to the Sooners Saturday via social media.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Newcombe has been a silent commit for several days since taking a midweek unofficial visit to Norman.

He’s rated by 247 Sports as a 4-star prospect and is ranked as the No. 22 corner in the nation. He’s also the No. 209 overall prospect, according to the 247 Sports Composite.

Recruited by cornerbacks coach Jay Valai out of the Phoenix suburb, Newcombe chose the Sooners over nearly two dozen other offers, including Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, Cal, Colorado, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ole Miss Stanford, USC, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and others.

Newcombe’s father, Bobby Newcombe, was the starting quarterback at Nebraska in 1998 (he slotted between Scott Frost and Eric Crouch and led the Huskers to a 9-4 record while playing hurt), and became a sixth-round NFL Draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals before playing in the Canadian Football League. Bobby Newcombe is also the head coach at Casteel.

Newcombe’s big brother Isaiah Newcombe is a cornerback at UCLA.

Newcombe was named District Two-Way Player of the Year in 2022, as well as first-team 6A Premier All-Region and first-ream 6A All-Conference.

In 33 games during his varsity career so far, Newcombe has 1,870 all-purpose yards with 12 total touchdowns.

Meanwhile, he’s also started for three years on defense, with 13 career interceptions (seven during his sophomore year) and 33 passes defensed (18 as a freshman) while making 155 total tackles — 56 as a freshman, 37 as a sophomore and 62 as a junior.

OU’s only verbal commitment from a high school prospect since National Signing Day in February was from 2025 quarterback Kevin Sperry, who committed on March 13.
