Oklahoma Lands Second 2024 WR Commitment

Oklahoma went to Missouri City, TX, to land a highly-touted wide receiver commitment just days after the Sooners' spring game.
In this story:

Emmett Jones has added a marquee wide receiver recruit.

Zion Kearney, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound pass catcher from Missouri City, TX, announced his commitment to the Sooners on Thursday.

Rated a 4-star recruit by both 247Sports and Rivals, Kearney picked Oklahoma over LSU, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Houston and Nebraska.

Kearney visited Norman this past weekend during Oklahoma’s spring game, and became Jones’ second wide receiver commitment in the 2024 recruiting cycle, joining K.J. Daniels.

As a junior last year, Kearney caught 39 passes for 765 yards and eight scores, a dominant force for Hightower High School.

A large target downfield, Kearney also used his speed to break open catches underneath the defense.

He ran a 10.89 100-meter dash this past February, showing off the speed Kearney uses to get into the end zone.

The decision to verbally commit to the Sooners gives Brent Venables six pledges already in the 2024 class.

Defensive back Jeremiah Newcombe was the first recruit to pull the trigger, and he’s been quickly followed by Daniels, quarterback Michael Hawkins, offensive lineman Isaiah Autry and defensive back Jaydan Hardy

Kearney is the first commitment since the spring game, however, though Autry and Hardy both committed in the lead-up to the massive weekend.

The Sooners are already ahead of their recruiting pace from last year.

At the end of April, Oklahoma had just four verbal commitments in Venables and Co.'s first full cycle in Norman.

Three of those commits ended up signing with the Sooners, as wide receiver Ashton Cozart later flipped his commitment to Oregon.

The bulk of OU's 2023 recruiting pickups came in the summer, as the coaching staff set the recruiting trail on fire in July. The hard work in Oklahoma's 2024 recruiting class has still yet to come.
