Oklahoma Lands Veteran Legacy QB Out of Transfer Portal

After starting for Texas and Nebraska, quarterback Casey Thompson is returning to the Sooner State to suit up for Oklahoma in 2024.

A former Oklahoma high school star is returning home to finish his college career.

Quarterback Casey Thompson, son of OU legend Charles Thompson, is transferring to Norman to join his father’s old team.

Thompson’s brother, Kendal Thompson, also played for OU from 2011-2013.

Casey Thompson has enjoyed one of the more unique paths in college football history.

He started his career at Texas, where he played in 20 games from 2019-2021.

Thompson won the starting job at Texas outright in Steve Sarkisian’s first season with the Longhorns in 2021, and he was on the losing side of Oklahoma’s dramatic 55-48 comeback victory spearheaded by Caleb Williams.

Thompson was excellent in the first half particularly, finishing with 388 passing yards and five touchdowns, completing 20-of-34 passing attempts.

In 12 games, he completed 63.2 percent of his passes, throwing for 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

That offseason, Thompson hit the transfer portal where he would eventually end up playing for another of his father’s bitter rivals — the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Oddly enough, Thompson’s landing spot again saw him take on Oklahoma, this time in Nebraska’s 49-14 drubbing at the hands of Brent Venables’ Sooners.

At the end of the 2022 campaign, Thompson again entered the transfer portal, reuniting with former Texas coach Tom Herman at Florida Atlantic.

Unfortunately, Thompson’s 2023 season was cut short just three games into the year after sustaining an ACL injury.

Now, Thompson will add crucial experience to an OU quarterback room light on career starts in college football.

Jackson Arnold’s only start came in Oklahoma’s Alamo Bowl loss to Arizona, and the departure of Davis Beville to the transfer portal leaves veteran General Booty who has logged minimal playing time at the FBS level, and a pair of true freshmen in Michael Hawkins Jr. and Brendan Zurbrugg.

In total, Thompson has played in 33 college football games across his career at Texas, Nebraska and FAU.
