Oklahoma LB Danny Stutsman Earns Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Honors
Danny Stutsman and the Oklahoma defense had another solid outing on Saturday night.
In addition to forcing two turnovers and blocking a punt, the Sooners' only allowed 11 points to what should be an explosive Mustang's offense. Stutsman played a big role in the strong performance by OU's defense, recording 17 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one fumble recovery.
Stutsman's efforts earned the junior linebacker Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors for week two, marking the first time in his collegiate career Stutsman has been named conference player of the week.
"I just trust the system I’m playing in," Stutsman said after the game. "Really starting to understand it. All those extra hours with the coaches is really starting to pay off. It slows down. I know there is so much to improve on. I made a lot of mistakes. I have a long ways to go."
In 2022, the Florida native was named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 after leading the conference in tackles with 125. Despite an impressive season last year, Stutsman was not on the 2023 Preseason All-Big 12 Team.
If the former 4-star linebacker continues to perform as well as he did against SMU, Stutsman will certainly push for a spot on one of the All-Big 12 teams this season.
On the year, Stutsman has 21 total tackles and will have the chance to rack up even more when the Sooners' head to Tulsa this weekend to take on the Golden Hurricane, who is fresh off of a 43-10 loss to Washington.
