Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel Announces Decision On Next Season
Oklahoma is getting their quarterback back for 2023.
After electing to wait until after the season before making any final determinations, Sooners signal-caller Dillon Gabriel announced on Thursday that he would be returning to the team for next season.
“Forever Home. Let’s do it again in 2023,” Gabriel wrote on Twitter.
After transferring over from UCF in the offseason, Gabriel assumed the starting quarterback role in Brent Venables’ inaugural season in Norman and had a very solid year statistically.
The left-hander completed 229 of his 366 pass attempts for 3,163 yards and 25 touchdowns while only throwing six interceptions.
His play was good enough to earn him the honor as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year as voted on by the league’s coaches as well as the Associated Press’ Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honor.
While most anticipated Gabriel would be back next year, getting him locked in will certainly provide some relief for Venables and offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby.
While 5-star freshman Jackson Arnold is coming into town, the rest of the quarterback room is immensely thin with only Davis Beville having thrown a collegiate pass in his career.
Gabriel being back certainly takes a lot of pressure off of Arnold to be the main man right away as well as keeping the position’s depth from getting extremely precarious.
Also worth noting is that not only does he return for 2023, but Gabriel also still has another year of eligibility if he wants it for 2024 as well.
