Oklahoma-TCU: AllSooners Staff Picks

The AllSooners staff offers up their predictions for the Sooners' season finale on Friday against the TCU Horned Frogs.

Oklahoma may have a few problems generating sustained offensive possessions if it’s Jackson Arnold taking snaps for the Sooners instead of Dillon Gabriel. It’s normal for the offense to misfire and lack consistency with a new QB — especially a true freshman. At the same time, it may be completely fair to expect Arnold to hit a throw or two — of the deep variety — that are not necessarily Gabriel’s strength. Quick-strike points could be the order of the day for Jeff Lebby and the OU offense. Don’t discount the possibility of another defensive touchdown, either: TCU’s biggest weakness this year is giving the football away, and the Sooners have been incredibly opportunistic.

Final: Oklahoma 35, TCU 27

Friday could get interesting in a hurry. TCU, led by redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Hoover, will bring the nation’s ninth-best passing attack to Owen Field trying to spoil Oklahoma’s Senior Day. Defending the pass has been up-and-down for the Sooners this year, as teams tend to find success and rack up yards but ultimately OU makes enough plays to force the necessary turnovers to put itself in a position to win. That will be tested again come Friday, but instead of handing the ball back to Dillon Gabriel, Oklahoma could be trusting true freshman Jackson Arnold to move the ball opposite of Hoover. Regardless of who is taking the snaps, the consistency in Oklahoma’s rushing attack has continued to give the Sooners a leg to stand on over the past few weeks, and the Horned Frogs’ struggles to score in the red zone could ultimately cost TCU bowl eligibility come Friday.

While the Sooners enter Saturday's contest with uncertainty at quarterback, OU should be able to handle TCU regardless of who is under center. With a full week of preparation and a home crowd, true freshman Jackson Arnold would likely be able to move the ball in Jeff Lebby's offense while the Oklahoma defense has been solid at Owen Field all season. If Dillon Gabriel is healthy and able to play, the Sooners should be able to pick up where they left off last week when the redshirt senior was forced to leave the game with a head injury.

Final: Oklahoma 42, TCU 24

Oklahoma’s last few weeks can best be described in one word: inconsistent. After blowing out West Virginia and looking like the team that showed up in the Cotton Bowl, the Sooners returned to earth and nearly dropped a penciled-in win against BYU. It’s hard to know what to expect at this point. TCU looks improved from the beginning of the season, but Oklahoma will be determined to finish the season with a win in front of the home fans and hit the 10-win mark. The Sooners also understand the conference implications and the postseason possibilities, which could lead to inspired football. OU will take care of business on Friday and watch Saturday’s Big 12 slate with viewing interest.

Final: Oklahoma 38, TCU 27
