Sooners in the NFL: Marvin Mims Marvelous Again In Denver's Blowout Loss

Oklahoma's Marvin Mims has been a serious bright spot throughout the Broncos first three games.

Marvin Mims was marvelous. The Denver Broncos were not.

The former Oklahoma star has been one of Denver’s few bright spots during the first three games of the season, and his talent and speed were on display again in a blowout loss to the Miami Dolphins. Miami nearly set an NFL record with points scored, dusting the Broncos 70-20. If it weren’t for Mims, the score might’ve been worse.

Russell Wilson’s deep threat chemistry with the rookie wide receiver has been on the money, and that’s the area Mims excelled in most when he played for the Sooners.

Through the air, Mims hauled in three passes for 73 yards, the longest one being a 38-yard miracle. He also recorded one rush for three yards, as the Broncos were clearly trying to get him involved.

The highlight of Mims’ afternoon came in the fourth quarter with the game already out of hand. He was getting work in as Denver’s kick returner — something he did regularly for the Sooners — and made a little bit of magic happen. Mims made a few defenders miss and turned on the burners, weaving in and out of the defense for an unbelievable 99-yard touchdown return.

Mims has been a weapon through the air and in the return game, picking up right where he left off for Oklahoma a season ago. Over the last two weeks, Mims has recorded 186 receiving yards, 13 rushing yards, two total touchdowns and a 45-yard punt return. He's had an impact in Denver and is looking like a second-round steal.

In 2022 for the Sooners, Mims totaled 1,083 yards receiving and brought in six touchdowns. Oklahoma's offense never fully got going, but Mims was always the most reliable player on the field. The Sooners have tried to make up for the loss of his production by a talented host of receivers, but it would've been an enormous lift to secure Mims for one more season.

If the Broncos turn things around this season, it seems like Mims will be a big reason why.
