Sunday Offering: Oklahoma Recruits React to Red River Rivalry

Last weekend, the Sooners took down the Texas Longhorns in a thrilling Red River Rivalry game in Dallas, here's what recruits had to say about the game.

Oklahoma pulled off one of its biggest wins of the past five years last Saturday when the Sooners defeated Texas 34-30 at the Cotton Bowl.

Coming off last year's blowout in the rivalry game and a lackluster season from OU, knocking off a team who, at the time, was ranked in the top three of the AP Poll and moving to 6-0 is a huge indication that Brent Venables and OU could be heading in the right direction as a program.

After Oklahoma's win, AllSooners spoke to a handful of Sooners commits and targets to hear their thoughts about the Red River Rivalry, and where OU stands in the college football landscape.

Here's what they had to say:

3-star 2024 OL Daniel Akinkunmi (OU commit)

"When I was watching the game against Texas, where they won, I knew this team could be something special. They walked down that field in the two-minute drill like it was nothing. You can tell they’ve repped this out multiple times to the point where they hardly make any mistakes anymore."

4-star 2024 DL Nigel Smith II (OU commit)

"I think OU did what they were supposed to do and it showed who was the better-coached team near the end."

3-star 2024 ATH Andy Bass (OU commit)

"I’m super grateful to have been able to be there in person for that one. It was a great memory and makes me so excited to be a part of the team. I was really impressed with the defense, and offense couldn’t be stopped either. Loved what I saw from Coach Lebby’s play designs as well. There (were) some plays run that I’ve never seen before, which is awesome."

4-star 2025 QB Kevin Sperry (OU commit)

"Man it was a great game! The whole team was balling. Defense had some key stops and was putting pressure on the QB all game. The offense did their thing, I’m so happy for DG. He works so hard and he deserves all of this. The game became a dog fight and that’s what Coach Venables teams are built for."

4-star 2025 DB CJ Jimcoily (OU offer)

"The Red River Rivalry was nothing short of sensational. There was not a dull moment throughout the entirety of the game. I was pulling for OU and they delivered with style. Both sides of the ball fired on all cylinders and the grit and physicality of every player was visible and admirable. The goal-line stand of the defense was a moment in particular that caught my attention as it encompassed the culture and mentality of OU. I got to talk to Coach Valai after and the winners mentality and the swag was apparent. OU was high on my list before but after a high-level game versus a high-level opponent, they’ve jumped up. A visit is coming soon."

3-star 2025 TE Chase Loftin (OU offer)

"I thought it was one of the best games I have watched. I think that it was a huge statement game for OU going against a top 5 opponent and beating them in a huge rivalry game. I am very impressed with what they have done this year and I would not be shocked if this was just the beginning of their success and possibly a national championship!"

2026 WR Brock Boyd (OU offer)

"I loved how they played. I think they put everyone on notice that they’re the real deal. They came up with a big-time win over a really good team."
