OU Softball: Second Oklahoma Player Hits the Transfer Portal

Oklahoma lost another piece to the transfer portal in utility player and backup catcher Sophia Nugent.

Another Oklahoma softball player is headed for the transfer portal.

Sophomore Sophia Nugent, who spent the last two seasons in Norman, will be looking for a new team this offseason, a source told AllSooners.

Nugent posted about it to social media on Monday, shortly after pitcher Jordy Bahl made her announcement that she was leaving OU.

Primarily used as a pinch-hitter over the past two years, Nugent has flashed plenty of power.

She hit one home run in 2022 as a freshman in 17 at-bats, but saw huge improvements this past year.

In 62 plate appearances, Nugent hit .274, blasting seven home runs and totaling 23 RBIs despite only making 18 starts.

Nugent, from Seal Beach, CA, struggled to carve out consistent playing time behind the plate for the Sooners.

In 2022, she was stuck behind captain Lynnsie Elam and Kinzie Hansen, and as a sophomore she had to fight for time at catcher behind Hansen and Texas A&M transfer Haley Lee.

Still, Nugent was able to find her way onto the field.

She featured in right field for Patty Gasso, but with Hansen slated to return for her final year in 2024, the opportunities for Nugent to catch would still have been limited.

Oklahoma’s lineup will still return plenty of power, as Tiare Jennings, Jayda Coleman, Alyssa Brito, Cydney Sanders, Rylie Boone and Alynah Torres are all slated to return alongside Hansen as the Sooners chase a fourth consecutive national title.
