Oklahoma State Baseball Falls to Sam Houston State 7-2 In Season Opener
The Oklahoma State baseball team played its first game of the season on Friday against Sam Houston State. There was plenty of excitement for the 2024 season on the OSU side, but after what happened last night, much of that excitement quickly faded. The Cowboys were defeated 7-2 by the Bearkats, largely due to the fact that they just could not get the bats rolling.
The Pokes struck out on over 33 percent of their at-bats, and that certainly did them no favors. They were not able to put the ball in play when it was necessary, and they ended up leaving several runners on base.
Catcher Beau Sylvester and second baseman Aidan Meola were the lone scorers in last night's game, with Meola being batted in by center fielder Zach Ehrhard, and Sylvester reaching home plate on an error.
The pitching staff as a whole was extremely underwhelming. Senior Sam Garcia got the start, allowing four runs and five hits in 4.1 innings pitched. He struck out four batters and walked one. Four more pitchers would get a chance on the mound, but none of them went any longer than two innings. Every pitcher that pitched a full inning for Oklahoma State allowed at least one run.
It was a very rough start to the season for the Pokes. With all the preseason expectations placed on this team, it is inexcusable to go out and lose in the way that they did on opening day. Still, they will get another shot at Sam Houston this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CT. We'll see if the Cowboys can bounce back and get the train rolling.
Notable Players:
Beau Sylvester - 4 AB, 2H, 1R
Zach Ehrhard - 3 AB, 1 RBI
Carson Benge - 4 AB, 1H, 1 SB
