BREAKING: Oklahoma State Parts Ways With HC Mike Boynton
The Oklahoma State Cowboys have reportedly parted ways with basketball head coach Mike Boynton, according to CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein. Boynton was with the program for seven seasons before the program decided to turn to a new direction.
Oklahoma State's decision to move on from Boynton comes after another incredibly underwhelming season. The Cowboys posted a 12-20 record on the season while going 4-14 in conference play.
Boynton's time in Stillwater will be marked by his incredible recruiting, which saw former No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham play for the Pokes. The on-court product never came to fruition, though, forcing the Cowboys into a new direction.
"For seven years, Coach Boynton has led this program and represented this university with class. We're grateful for the genuine passion and core he has for the student-athletes on our team," OSU Athletic Director Chad Weiberg said in a release. "Unfortunately, the desired results have not followed. Therefore, it is time to part ways and begin a new chapter. We wish Coach Boynton and his family the very best."
Through seven seasons, Boynton posted an overall record of 119-109, ten games over .500. The lack of success, even with some very solid recruiting classes, eventually drained the interest around the basketball program. Seats were struggling to be filled and the buzz around Cowboy basketball was seemingly gone.
The program needed a spark, and landing a new head coach will do just that. With the new world of college sports heavily featuring the transfer portal, the new head coach will be stepping into a big opportunity. Retaining the young talent while bringing in new guys to match his system will be huge.
Boyton crossed the 20-win mark just three times with Oklahoma State, something that the program used to do plenty of while consistently making NCAA Tournament appearances. The Cowboys will look to get back to that mark as they make a new hire, looking to revitalize the program.
