Pressure Mounting For Mike Boynton Through Big 12 Basketball Woes
Big 12 basketball is no easy battle on any given night. To make matters worse, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are performing worse than any other team, meaning every game I that much more difficult.
So far, the Cowboys have started off their Big 12 basketball schedule with six straight losses. A bad start to conference play could have been predicted after they started 8-5 in non-conference play, and that included a five-game win streak leading up to conference play.
Every Big 12 team not in Stillwater has at least two conference wins, even including 7-12 West Virginia. This isn't a great look for Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton, who has absolutely thrived in the recruiting scene, but his team can't seem to take care of business, despite holding leads in winnable games.
On Tuesday, the Cowboys encapsulated their season all in one game. They were playing fast and scoring with ease in the first half, building as much as a 17-point lead. It seemed as if they were on their way to a big win to get on track before letting TCU back into the game.
Down the stretch, in a close game, TCU simply executed and the Cowboys didn't, leaving the Cowboys for another upset loss in a game they were set up to win.
While Boynton's recruiting has been incredible, and he's got plenty of talent on the current iteration of the roster, he's been unable to convert the talent to wins, and that isn't new for him. He's in year seven in Stillwater, and his 2021 campaign with Cade Cunningham extended his stay as the lead guy.
With the way things have gone since Cunningham was drafted, though, things don't look great for Boynton. If he's unable to put together the on-court product while bringing in solid recruiting and transfer portal classes, the Cowboys would have to at least consider another future. The pressure could be mounting for Boynton.
