Turnaround Season Brewing For Oklahoma State Basketball?
Since getting to Stillwater, Mike Boyton has brought plenty of talent to Oklahoma State's basketball program. This, however, hasn't shown too much in the win column. He arrived in 2017 and the Cowboys have a total record of 107-90 in that span.
The Big 12 is no easy place for a basketball program to be. They provide tough competition on a game-by-game basis, and there's no true night off when in conference play.
Boynton's best season came in the 2020-21 season when navigating with the top recruit at the time in Cade Cunningham, who was a future No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft. That team had a 21-9 record on the season, which ended in the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.
With a postseason ban in the 2021-22 season, the Cowboys returned to postseason play last season, and this year, the program is hopeful for an NCAA Tournament appearance once again.
Headlined by transfer Isaiah Miranda and recruit Eric Dailey Jr., the program had good additions that could help the Cowboys make a deep run this season. Dailey is an NBA-level talent and Miranda's post presence at 7-foot-1 is going to be a huge help.
The program has nine new players this season, five recruits and four transfers. They're going to be a much different team than the one that rolled out last season. They had a 20-16 record last season but went 8-10 in Big 12 play.
With two four-star transfers and two four-star recruits, the Cowboys could put together a NCAA Tournament-qualifying season. They've got a blend of experience and new talent that, if they mesh well, could be a problem for opposing teams.
A bad season could supposedly leave Boynton on the hot seat, but success in the Big 12 and postseason action could extend his stay and turn the narrative around. Nonetheless, a big season is coming for Oklahoma State's basketball program.
