Former OSU Football Cornerback Players Transfers to Colorado
While the college football transfer portal is closed, the transfer portal season is more than active. Former Oklahoma State defensive back DJ McKinney has made his decision of where he'll next play college football.
McKinney is headed to Boulder to play for Colorado under the coaching of Deion Sanders, a legendary defensive back at both the college and pro football levels. Sanders has begun to turn around the Buffaloes program, as he took a one-win team and won four games last season.
Now, he looks to continue building on that as Colorado makes the move to the Big 12, where they'll travel to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State in 2024. As he does so, he'll receive help from McKinney, who spent a couple seasons with the Cowboys.
He appeared in four games in 2022 before playing in 13 games this season for Oklahoma State, being one of the most featured cornerbacks on the team. He totaled 38 tackles and defended five passes in his first season seeing any real burn for the Cowboys.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound defensive back remains a raw prospect for the Buffaloes, as he was in Stillwater, but will be under guidance of a former legendary defensive back, making the future seem bright for the former three-star recruit.
McKinney will have three years of eligibility remaining for the Buffaloes. For the Cowboys, McKinney was one of their transfer-outs to have played the biggest role next season.
Still, the Cowboys weakest position was arguably the secondary. It'll be interesting to see how they approach replacing McKinney's impact and snaps, but they'll likely be playing more young cornerbacks.
The Cowboys are gearing up for what could be an incredible 2024 football season. They're returning their starters offensively and are seeing key defenders start to announce their returns. If they can lock things down in the secondary, it could be a season with quite a high ceiling for Oklahoma State.
