Looking at Oklahoma State's History Against Texas Ahead of Big 12 Championship
Oklahoma State is a win away from a Big 12 title with a familiar foe in its way.
Texas awaits OSU in Arlington as both seek a Big 12 championship for the first time in more than a decade. While both schools have had ups and downs in that span, the meetings between them have had a clear shift in that time.
When Mike Gundy took the job as head coach at OSU in 2005, Texas had dominated the all-time matchup, winning 17 of the 19 meetings. Gundy could not stop Texas’ dominance against his team, losing his first five games in the matchup.
Those five games secured the Longhorns’ 12-game winning streak against the Cowboys. But in 2010, Mack Brown’s team faced defeat for the first time against the Cowboys.
Led by Brandon Weeden, Justin Blackmon and Kendall Hunter, OSU turned the tide against Texas with a 33-16 win in Austin. OSU followed that up with a second straight win in Austin in 2011 after not winning there since 1944.
Those games began a streak of five straight wins in Austin for the Cowboys from 2010-17. Since Gundy’s first win against the Longhorns in 2010, he has led his team to a 9-4 record in the matchup.
In that time, OSU has entered with a better record in all but one of its wins. That game was in 2018, in the most recent matchup OSU has had against a top-10 Texas team.
Tylan Wallace went for 222 yards and two touchdowns as OSU pulled off the upset in a game it would need to reach bowl eligibility. Although OSU does not need a win against Texas this season to reach bowl eligibility, a win would send OSU to a New Year’s Six bowl.
But OSU's luck ran out after a four-game winning streak with back-to-back losses in 2019-20. Texas' win in 2020 gave No. 6 OSU its first loss in overtime and started a downward spiral in Stillwater that season.
OSU’s most recent New Year’s Six appearance included a trip to the Big 12 Championship after a crucial win against Texas. In 2021, Jason Taylor’s 85-yard pick-six helped OSU get a 32-24 win in Austin en route to an 11-1 regular season.
Texas still leads the series 26-11, but just like OSU’s series with Oklahoma, a win this season would leave a lasting impact in Stillwater. More importantly, a victory would bring a Big 12 championship trophy to Stillwater for just the second time.
