Rudolph Ruled Out for Game Against Chargers
I think everyone knew that this was going to happen, but the Steelers made it official on Saturday: quarterback Mason Rudolph will miss Sunday night's game against the Chargers with a concussion.
The Steelers will start third-string quarterback Devlin Hodges instead. For those of you that don't know who Hodges is, it's actually a very cool story. Hodges' is out of Samford where he won the 2018 Walter Payton Award for the best offensive player at the FCS level.
He then tried out for the Steelers at the rookie mini-camp where he earned an invitation to training camp. He was then cut just following the Steelers final preseason game, but was then signed to the practice squad and promoted following the injury to Ben Roethlisberger.
While I'm looking forward to Rudolph being back out on the field, I'm certainly happy for Hodges. While the NFL is an extremely difficult place to play, it's an amazing place when something like this happens to a guy that virtually walked on to the program.
Rudolph was knocked out of last Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens in the 3rd quarter when safety Earl Thomas delivered a hit that connected with Rudolph on the chin.
It was a scary moment because Rudolph was instantly knocked unconscious and remained that way for a rather alarming time, but was actually able to get up and walk off the field.
He was then taken to the hospital where he was released the same day.
The news came out on Friday that the NFL actually fined Thomas $21,000 for the hit. It was also reported that Thomas will appeal the fine.
