Oklahoma State Blown Out at Home by South Alabama
Oklahoma State came out flat and never recovered en route to an embarrassing loss.
South Alabama beat OSU 33-7 on Saturday night to move both teams to 2-1. USA outperformed OSU in every major statistic in its dominant victory in Stillwater.
La’Damian Webb led the way for USA, rushing for 151 yards and two touchdowns. OSU’s defense struggled to contain the passing attack all night and left receivers open on a number of occasions to make USA quarterback Carter Bradley’s job easier.
Although the Cowboys’ defense played a solid second half, it was not enough. It was not a shutout like their game against Arizona State, but the Cowboys allowed only three points in the first 20 minutes of the second half.
Collin Oliver sacked Bradley and forced a fumble mid-way through the third quarter, but the Jaguars recovered. The Cowboys got the stop on the drive and forced a punt, but not securing the fumble recovery may have cost them their best chance at a comeback.
Despite the solid second-half performance, OSU dug itself too deep of a hole. OSU struggled mightily on both sides of the ball in the first half, giving up three touchdowns and not scoring on offense.
After a Cowboys’ punt set up the Jaguars at their own 41-yard line late in the second quarter, they found the end zone in just two plays. Bradley flung a 57-yard pass to Caullin Lacy in stride to make it 23-0 going into halftime.
While there were not many positives for OSU, it may have made some progress in the quarterback race. Alan Bowman’s struggle to get the offense going after the start likely took the race down to a two-man battle.
Gunnar Gundy drove the Cowboys to their only touchdown of the night but was not particularly impressive. Meanwhile, Garret Rangel did not get his first drive until the Jaguars had extended the lead to three possessions in the fourth quarter.
OSU’s nonconference play has left little reason for optimism as Big 12 opponents loom.
