Oklahoma State HC Mike Gundy Praises Star Running Back After Award Win
Ollie Gordon was a huge factor in the Oklahoma State Cowboys turning their season around after a slow start. He was mixed into a small rotation of running backs for the first few games, but when he got the primary snaps and touches, he proved to be the nation's best running back.
Gordon rushed for 1,614 yards and walked into the end zone 20 times on the season with 258 rushing attempts. He added 326 yards and a touchdown in the receiving game.
Needless to say, Mike Gundy and the Cowboys found an absolute star and likely their next NFL running back. During a press conference on Thursday, Gundy acknowledged Gordon's incredible achievement that was winning the Doak Walker Award.
"He’s very deserving,” Gundy said of Gordon winning the Doak Walker. “Proud for our organization and Ollie and obviously the offense and the guys that helped him get to that point. Not many guys Doak Walker winners. One [player] a year. Pretty cool deal.”
Of course, winning an award essentially states he's the best running back in the nation, but Gundy went another step in complimenting Gordon as a person.
“Ollie is Ollie,” Gundy continued. “Ollie is the same as he always is. Ollie’s challenge will be to stay humble and practice hard and all the things that’s difficult to do when you’re his age and getting all the notoriety that he is. But he’s done well. One thing Ollie has done is competed in games. He’s played hard, competes, so as long as he’ll do that, he’ll be fine.”
Now, the Cowboys and Oklahoma State fans await a decision from Gordon, as he's yet to announce whether he's going to return to the program or not. The Cowboys have returned five starting offensive linemen and look to be active in the portal to add more -- setting up for a potential Gordon return.
As he stated on Thursday, Gordon wants to announce his decision on his time.
