Oklahoma State Quarterback Alan Bowman Seeking Another Year of NCAA Eligibility
The state of college football is a bit confusing. Between the transfer portal, NIL and extra eligibility because covid, the state of players in college football is much different. Some players are leaving their teams, taking bigger NIL deals or even playing for five to six seasons.
However, Oklahoma State has a player searching to play for a seventh football season. It's not just any player, either, it's the team's starting quarterback. Alan Bowman is submitting a waiver to gain eligibility for one more season.
“There’s a waiver that you have to submit to the NCAA to extend your five-year clock, to get into the technical [aspect] of it,” Bowman said.
Before Bowman even makes a decision on whether he wants to return for an additional season, he would have to get approved via his waiver by the NCAA.
“We’re in the process of submitting that. So, before any decisions of coming back or not coming back, we have to see if that waiver gets accepted because there’s no point to say, ‘Oh, I want to come back,’ and then it’s like, ‘Well, you can’t play.’ So we’re kind of waiting on that. We’re in the process of that.”
Bowman would be returning to a quarterback room including Garret Rangel and Zane Flores. With Gunnar Gundy hitting the transfer portal, Bowman's production could actually be used, unless the Cowboys wanted to defer to their youth, which would then see Bowman in a backup role for his final season.
The process of applying for the waiver could take a couple of weeks, as Bowman alluded to, as he's waiting to hear back from the NCAA.
The Cowboys next take action against Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 27 at 8:00 p.m. CT as they search for their tenth win of the season.
