Oklahoma State Running Back Takes Home the Doak Walker Award
Ollie Gordon just did something that no other Oklahoma State player has done; win the Doak Walker Award.
The sophomore running back collects the award for the best running back in college football this season, beating out North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton and Missouri’s Cody Schrader.
Gordon’s numbers this season proves why he deserves this prestigious honor. He has 1,614 rushing yards so far this season, which is tops in the country. Gordon has also secured 20 rushing touchdowns on the season, including five touchdowns against BYU.
The Cowboys started 2-2 on the season, and that is when Mike Gundy and the offense made a change. Gordon said he had to stay persistent and committed to the season.
“Staying committed, it was an easy thing,” Gordon said on Friday. “You have to stay a team player. We were playing good as a team. Whenever things started clicking for us, it got better and we were good.”
Gordon started to get recognition in the month of October, when the Cowboys went on a five-game winning streak. He had five straight games with over 100 rushing yards, including two games with over 200 rushing yards.
He also has proven this season that he can be an efficient receiver. Gordon has 37 catches for 326 yards and one touchdown, including six catches for 116 yards against the Kansas Jayhawks.
The sophomore has already collected multiple honors this season. On Wednesday, Gordon was named to PFF’s and CBS’s All-American teams, making him the third cowboy running back to do that in the Mike Gundy era.
Gordon also finished top five in the Associated Press’s college football player of the year award, with the honor going to LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.
With the way this season has gone for Gordon, it is only fitting he takes home the top prize for running backs in college football.
Gordon will look to add some more hardware when the Cowboys take on the Texas A&M Aggies in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 27 at 8 p.m. at NRG Stadium. The game can be seen on ESPN.
