Ollie Gordon II did not get the invite to New York City but had one of the best Heisman finishes in Oklahoma State history.

Gordon finished seventh in voting for the 2023 Heisman Trophy, marking just the eighth time an OSU player has received Heisman votes. While it had already been announced that he was not a finalist, OSU’s star still had a finish to be proud of.

His top-seven spot was good for the best finish by a running back this season and the best by a Cowboy since Mason Rudolph also took the seventh spot for his 2017 campaign. Before that, Justin Blackmon’s fifth-place finish in 2010 was the last time a Cowboy finished above that mark.

Much like Blackmon did in his 2010 season, Gordon still took home the award for being the best player at his position. On Friday, he became the first Cowboy to win the Doak Walker Award, which goes to the nation’s top running back.

Before getting into his significance for OSU this season, Gordon was objectively the top running back in college football. He led the nation in rushing with 1,614 yards and scored 20 touchdowns.

In another parallel to Blackmon’s season, Gordon was also named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. While he did the bulk of his damage on the ground, OSU’s star in the backfield also caught 37 passes for 326 yards and a touchdown.

His lone receiving touchdown came in his premier dual-threat game against Kansas, where he went for more than 100 yards rushing and receiving. That game was also in the middle of OSU’s five-game winning streak that saw Gordon eclipse 100 yards rushing each game.

In that stretch, he also had back-to-back games of more than 250 yards rushing against West Virginia and Cincinnati. Stringing that three-game performance together made him the only FBS player in the past decade to accumulate 250 scrimmage yards in three consecutive games.

Gordon will have a chance to pad his numbers and help OSU to a 10th win in the Texas Bowl against Texas A&M later this month before starting another potential Heisman campaign in Stillwater next season.
