What Are Mike Gundy’s Thoughts on Cincinnati?

Mike Gundy shared what he sees in the Cincinnati Bearcats at his weekly press conference.

After an impressive win against West Virginia, Oklahoma State is back at home this Saturday as it takes on the Cincinnati Bearcats.

The Bearcats come in 2-5 on the season, but they have played some close games. OSU head coach Mike Gundy said he was surprised when he first started looking at the tape on Sunday.

“I was shocked when I first started watching Cincinnati’s tape. I looked at the record and then looked at the tape and I’m like ‘That doesn't match up,'" Gundy said. “I mean this is the best defensive line we have played all year.”

Gundy is right, the Bearcats defensive line is the best line the Cowboys have faced this year. Cincinnati comes in ranked 18th in rushing defense and 46th in total defense.

OSU will counter that with Ollie Gordon and the rushing attack that has been impressive the last four weeks. Gordon has 816 rushing yards this season, which is good for eighth in the country.

The sophomore also has eight rushing touchdowns on the season. There is a lot to like about Gordon, but Gundy said Gordon has two traits that have really caught his attention.

“His durability has been impressive,” Gundy said. “In the last few games, he has become a little bit elusive. I don’t think any of us thought that was a part of his package.”

Cincinnati quarterback Emory Jones was on Arizona State last season, who the Cowboys played last year. Gundy said he won’t look back on that game and will just focus on what he has done for the Bearcats.

“It’s a different concept and what they are doing,” Gundy said. “Obviously the coach is new and the schemes are new but the quarterback bouncing around, that is not new.”

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The game can be seen on ESPN 2.
