What Would a College Football Super League Mean for Oklahoma State?
The future of college football is as shaky as ever, and conference realignment could lead to some drastic changes.
Oklahoma State has been in the Big 12 since it was founded in 1996 and was part of its predecessor, the Big 8. for decades prior. Amid the changing landscape of college football, even the future of the Big 12 after expanding is up in the air.
This has led to speculation about what conferences and the sport might look like in the next several years. Some, such as Andy Staples of On3, have come up with the concept of a college football super league.
In Staples’ example, the Cowboys would end up on the SEC’s side of the league. Along with other teams in the region, the Cowboys would be a part of the Southwest division.
Interestingly enough, this example almost takes college football back 15 years to the original Big 12. The Southwest division of Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, OSU and Kansas State nearly recreates the Big 12 South.
With Kansas State substituted for Baylor, which did not make the super league, the division could be filled with rivalries. Of course, the prospect of OSU joining the SEC could reignite those rivalries.
Although that is unlikely for now, in a super league, matchups against Texas and Texas A&M would be back on the schedule. Most importantly, it could continue the Bedlam series.
After the Sooners’ move to the SEC this fall, the rivalry will need a significant change to continue. Although an occasional postseason matchup is possible with the expansion of the College Football Playoff, a full series would need collaboration between the schools on a nonconference schedule or further conference realignment.
Although this specific concept would work independently of the other sports as a non-NCAA entity, any major conference realignment such as this would still have an immense impact on athletics across the board.Â
