Bedlam 2011: Oklahoma State Routs the Sooners for Big 12 Title
Pure domination. That’s the story of Oklahoma State’s Bedlam win in 2011.
The best regular season in OSU history ended with a 44-10 rout of Oklahoma in Stillwater. If OSU’s win had happened today, it would have secured a spot in the College Football Playoff.
But in 2011, the Cowboys were ranked No. 3 after a crushing double-overtime loss to Iowa State, and their big win was not enough to jump Alabama in the rankings and reach the BCS National Championship. Still, the Bedlam win gave the Cowboys their first Big 12 title and was the first win they had over the Sooners since 2002.
OSU set the tone early and never looked back. On OSU’s second drive, Brandon Weeden found Tracy Moore for a 53-yard connection before Jeremy Smith’s 9-yard touchdown run gave OSU a 7-0 lead.
On the next drive, Brodrick Brown picked off Landry Jones in the end zone to force the first of five OU turnovers. That turnover helped OSU add a field goal, but the next one put a touchdown on the board.
After Alex Elkins forced a fumble from Jones, Jamie Blatnik picked it up and ran the ball back nearly 60 yards before getting taken down at the 1-yard line. Blatnik’s return set up Joseph Randle’s touchdown to take a 17-point lead.
Randle led the Cowboys downfield and got his second touchdown on the next drive. The Cowboys’ rushing attack was massive against the Sooners as Randle finished with 151 yards, while Smith went for 119 yards on just 10 carries.
OSU led 24-3 at halftime and quickly extended that lead in the second half. With a Quinn Sharp field goal to begin the third quarter, OSU’s defense got a chance to put the game out of reach.
As Jones went to throw a screen on first down, the ball slipped out of his hands, going backward, and was recovered by Richetti Jones for a touchdown. That put the Cowboys up 34-3 and effectively sealed any possibility of a Sooners comeback.
Two-time Biletnikoff winner Justin Blackmon led the Cowboys in receiving with 95 yards. Weeden finished with 217 yards passing, his fewest in a game that season.
Both players showed out in their final game with the Cowboys a few weeks later: a 41-38 Fiesta Bowl victory against No. 4 Stanford. With that, the Cowboys finished the season 12-1 and No. 3 in the final AP poll.
