No. 13 BYU Outlasts Oklahoma State at Home
Oklahoma State, now reeling with three-straight conference losses, took on new Big 12 titan in No. 13 BYU on Friday night.
Here were updates from the highly anticipated game:
FINAL: BYU 38, Oklahoma State 35
4Q:
The Cowboys again found their rhythm near the end of the third and start of the final quarter. It put together a nine-play, 79-yard drive that ended in a double pass from Bowman, to Brennan Presely, back to Bowman for the 16-yard touchdown reception and equalizer.
BYU stayed true to its offensive process on the next drive, going about 50 yards with a mix of ground and air plays to set up a go-ahead field goal. BYU's Will Ferrin knocked it through from 41 to give the Cougars a 3-point lead.
OSU picked up a crucial first down at midfield with around six minutes left in the contest, and another on 4th and 1 after the returning Gordon hurdled the pile.
With just two minutes remaining, Presley helped extend the Cowboys eight-plus minute drive with a 21-yard third-down conversion. The Cowboys are at least set up in field goal range, with just a minute and change left in the game, down three.
With just 1:13 left in the game, Bowman connected with Presley again for another Pokes touchdown through the air. Ward's PAT would make it a four-point game.
Retzlaff picked up a game-saving 4th and 7 to keep the Cougars hope alive. After a 2-yard pickup and failure to get out of bounds, BYU had to burn a timeout with just 29 seconds left in the ballgame.
Retzlaff connected Lassiter on a 35-yard touchdown with just 10 seconds left in the game, likely seasling it over the Cowboys at home.
3Q:
Oklahoma State kept with the read option to some success to open the third quarter, but eventually stalled its drive. Logan Ward missed his 48-yard kick in a momentum swing for the Cougars.
BYU kept that momentum going into its first drive of the second half, largely pounding the rock on the ground and moving the sticks often. LJ Martin eventually punched it in on the ground to even up the score at 21's.
Bowman threw an interception on OSU's first play of the second drive of the half to give BYU even more momentum. On his first pass attempt of the half, Retzlaff threw a 34-yard touchdown strike to Keelan Marion. The Cougars have scored 14 unaswered points.
2Q:
Fresh off their own forced interception, Rangel airmailed his first pass of the drive, and Cougars safety Tanner Wall returned it 47 yards to the one yard line to set up an easy BYU score.
Following his worst throw of the season, Rangel bounced back to engineer one of OSU's best drives of the season. The team went 75 yards in 10 plays, mixing it up both on the ground and through the air. Rangel did both, eventually flipping the ball to Gordon, who easily hurdled a BYU defender for his second score of the game.
With BYU driving yet again, Retzlaff saw one of a few blemishes this season, throwing a pick deep in OSU territory to cough the ball up.
With just three minutes remaining in the half, on a 3rd and 1, Rangel kept the ball on a sneaky keeper, burning off 56 yards to set up the Cowboys on their opponent's 11-yard line. He was injured on the play, heading to the locker-room shortly after, but Alan Bowman and Gordon helped finish off the drive to put the Cowboys up, 21-14.
Retzlaff threw another interception to end the half, but time expired following his tackle.
1Q:
BYU and quarterback Jake Retzlaff kicked the game off with a bang, as the slinger connected with Darius Lassiter for 50 yards on the first offensive play. The team continued driving, and after a timeout, drew up a designed QB run that put Retzlaff into the endzone for the first points of the game.
Led by new starter Garret Rangel, though, Oklahoma State bounced back. Rangel picked up the Pokes initial first down before the scheme fell on star running back Ollie Gordon's shoulders. On his third carry of the game, Gordon took it 50 yards to the house to tie the game up at seven's.
BYU's offense saw a few chunk run plays on its second drive, but failed to string a full drive together, eventually punting on 4th and 11.
OSU fell similarly flat on its second drive, punting back after a three-and-out.
The Cougars were driving to end the opening frame, but threw an errant pass from a running back on a faulty trick play, surrendering the first turnover of the game.
