Nick Martin Lone Bright Spot on Cowboy Defense in loss to Texas

The linebacker had a solid outing despite the loss against Texas in the Big 12 Championship game.

Oklahoma State’s defense had a rough day on Saturday against the Texas Longhorns, and the big bag of ice that OSU linebacker Nick Martin had told the story.

The sophomore had the bag of ice on his cheek, but Martin said he would keep doing this if that's what it takes.

“It’s war, you know what I’m saying,” Martin said. “If I gotta do this and go through all this pain inflicted for my guys, I’d do it a million times-plus.”

The Cowboys gave up 662 yards on defense, en route to a 49-21 loss to the Longhorns in the Big 12 Championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.

While most of the defense struggled on Saturday, the lone bright spot was linebacker Martin.

Martin racked up 13 tackles, including an interception in the contest against Texas. He now has 133 tackles on the season, which puts him No. 11 ranked in OSU history for tackles in a single season.

It was the sixth time this season Martin racked up double-digit tackles this season and the fifth time he has collected 12+ tackles in a game.

His interception in the second quarter was a timely one. Texas was driving up 28-7 on the Cowboys, and Martin stepped right in and picked off Quinn Ewers. OSU would score two plays later when Alan Bowman found Rashod Owens, cutting the deficit to 28-14.

Martin has been a key contributor all season for Oklahoma State, and he will look to do the same in the bowl game and next season for the Cowboys.

Martin and the Cowboys will now wait to see where they will go bowling when the bowl games are announced on Sunday.
