Oklahoma State Cowgirls Winless in Trip to the Bahamas

A disappointing road trip put a damper on Oklahoma State’s otherwise encouraging start.
The Cowgirls lost both games in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship in the Bahamas. It began with a loss to Penn State on Monday.
Coming into the game, OSU was 2-1, with its only loss being on the road against a Colorado team that is now ranked No. 3. OSU’s game against Penn State was close as expected.
However, the Cowgirls did not get off to a good start. After the Cowgirls took a 6-5 lead in the early minutes, they would not lead again in the first half.
Ali Brigham led the way for Penn State with 10 points in the first half as the lead ballooned to as much as 13 in the second quarter. OSU used a run to get within six at halftime and played well in the third quarter to turn the game around.
The Cowgirls’ 16-4 run helped them take the lead midway through the third quarter. Lior Garzon scored eight points in the run, including two 3-pointers, on her way to 13 in the game.
Penn State used a last-second shot to take the lead back heading into the fourth quarter and never gave it up. OSU tried to get back in it but could never get over the hump.
Turnovers devastated the Cowgirls as Anna Gret Asi turned it over 10 times as part of the Cowgirls’ 25. The Lady Lions scored 29 points off turnovers in their 89-80 win.
On Wednesday, the Cowgirls had a more challenging game against No. 15 Ohio State. OSU lost 75-57 to Ohio State and fell behind early en route to the loss.
The Buckeyes won the first quarter 24-13, but the Cowgirls cut the deficit to six by halftime. Still trailing by six late in the third quarter, the Cowgirls began to lose control of the game. Ohio State held and extended its lead in the fourth quarter as it took a 15-point lead midway through the final frame.
The Cowgirls shot themselves out of the second game, making just three of their 24 attempts from beyond the arc.
While the Cowgirls have dropped to 2-3 this season, their tough early schedule gets easier in the rest of nonconference play. But if these games indicate how they will perform in Big 12 play, it may be a long season for the Cowgirls.
