Louisiana Tech Baseball Releases Statement Following Midweek Loss to Ole Miss
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Rebels split their midweek series with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 1-1 on Wednesday night thanks to a little help from mother nature.
The Rebels entered the top half of the seventh inning with a 4-3 lead, but with two outs in the inning, Louisiana Tech had pushed across two runs in the frame, giving it a 5-4 lead when lightning was detected in the area, forcing a delay.
The game was eventually called due to weather, but thanks to an interesting rule from the NCAA, Ole Miss was awarded a 4-3 win. Due to the Bulldogs not finishing the top of the seventh inning before the delay occurred, the umpire ruled that the game would be called after six innings.
Understandably, Louisiana Tech was upset about the outcome and its athletic department released a statement after the game. What's interesting about the statement, however, is that the Bulldogs are not complaining about the rule created by the NCAA, rather they appear to be pointing a finger at Ole Miss.
"At no point during the two-plus hour delay were there any plans to tarp the field if heavy rain became an issue. We approached Ole Miss offering to return ot Oxford to finish the game at a future date (possibly as early as next week). However, the Rebels head coach said his administration would not allow him to resume the game according to Bulldog head coach Lane Burroughs."
The Bulldogs state that Ole Miss never had plans to tarp the field or reschedule the game for a later date. Louisiana Tech coach Lane Burroughs was also very heated in his postgame presser, and his frustration was pointed at Ole Miss.
"We won't be scheduling Ole Miss again in the regular season as long as I'm the coach here."
If only those tarps had the power to prevent lightning.
