Ex-Ole Miss SS Jacob Gonzalez Signs Contract With Chicago White Sox
OXFORD, Miss. -- Former Ole Miss Rebels shortstop Jacob Gonzalez is officially a member of the Chicago White Sox organization after reportedly inking his contract for $3.9 million on Sunday.
Gonzalez was selected by the White Sox with the No. 15 pick in the first round 2023 MLB Draft last Sunday. Gonzalez became the eighth first-round draft pick in program history and the first Rebel selected in the first round since RHP Gunnar Hoglund in 2021. According to MLB.com, the value of Gonzalez's draft slot (No. 15) is $4.4 million.
In his three-year career in Oxford, Gonzalez hit .319 with 40 home runs, 158 RBIs and was walked 123 times contributing to his .427 on-base percentage. His 186 runs scored are the third most in program history.
The Rebels underperformed in 2023, but Gonzalez still managed to have a productive season. The Glendora, Calif., native hit for .327 in 202 at-bats this spring recording 46 runs scored, 66 hits, 10 home runs, and 51 RBIs. In 2023, Gonzalez led Ole Miss in walks (35) and doubles (18). His 18 two-baggers were tied for seventh in the Southeastern Conference.
Gonzalez also brought his season strikeout total down to a career-low 28. In all three years at Ole Miss, he never had a season with an on-base-plus-slugging percentage lower than .900.
