Rebels Kemp Alderman Named Finalist For 2023 Ferriss Trophy

Kemp Alderman could forever be remembered in Mississippi should he take home the Magnolia State's finest award.
In this story:

Kemp Alderman might be a part of the Ole Miss baseball team, but he's earning individual honors for his efforts in 2023.

Alderman was named a finalist for the Ferriss Trophy, given out to the top collegiate baseball player in the state of Mississippi. The award was named after former Rebels great Dave ‘Boo’ Ferriss and has been awarded to one player in the Magnolia State every season since 2004.

Other finalists for the award include Mississippi State infielder Hunter Hines, Jackson State infielder Ty Hill and Southern Mississippi pitcher Tanner Hall and outfielder Slade Wilks. Last season, Rebels first baseman and captain Tim Elko was named a finalist, though the award went to Hall after he posted a 2.72 ERA and a 7-2 record for the Golden Eagles.

Alderman, a junior from Decatur, has been one of the Rebels' more consistent hitters following a national championship bout in 2022. He leads Ole Miss in batting average (.377), slugging percentage (.733), hits (72), home runs (19) and runs batted in (59). He ranks third in the SEC in total bases, fourth in hits, fifth in home runs, sixth in RBI, seventh in batting average, and ninth in slugging percentage.

Alderman will have the chance to close out the season on a career note should he sign with a roster if selected in next month's MLB Draft. He currently holds a 43-game on-base streak, and a 13-game hit streak. He also has 18 hits over his last nine games. Alderman's on-base streak is tied for the fourth-longest active streak in Division I and is the second-longest active streak in the SEC, trailing only LSU outfielder and potential No. 1 pick Dylan Crews (51).

Should Alderman beat out the other four finalists, he'll become the first Rebels player to win the Ferriss Award since outfielder Auston Bousfield in 2014. Hall, who currently holds a 9-3 record and 2.71 ERA, could make history as the first double recipient of the award.

The Rebels return to Swayze Field for a doubleheader against Auburn Friday. The first pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 2 p.m., while Game 2 is projected to start at 6:30 p.m.
