Ole Miss vs. Southern Miss Midweek Game Declared 'No Contest' Partway Through Play
PEARL, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Rebels and Southern Miss Golden Eagles played a competitive baseball game on Tuesday night that, according to the record books, did not exist.
The in-state foes met at Trustmark Park for their annual neutral site game on Tuesday, and the battle had reached the fourth inning with Southern Miss leading 2-1. Then, the game was erased from history due to "sod conditions" on the field.
According to David Eckert of The Clarion Ledger who covered the game in person, the final discussion about the turf came after a bunt play in the fourth.
Eckert also provided photos of the turf after the conclusion of the "non-game".
Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Southern Miss all play one another in a midweek game in Pearl each season at the home of the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, the Mississippi Braves. This contest, however, will go down as never having happened even though nearly half of it had been played in Central Mississippi.
After this trip to Pearl, the Rebels will travel to College Station this weekend to face the Texas A&M Aggies in a battle of current cellar-dwellers of the SEC. Ole Miss currently holds a mark of 0-6 in conference play, and the Aggies bring a 1-5 record into the showdown.
First pitch of the series opener is set for 6 p.m. CT on Friday on SEC Network+.
