Ole Miss Earns Sweep of Purdue, Shifts to Conference Play on Horizon
OXFORD, Miss. -- The No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels picked up a sweep of the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday with a 6-1 win at Swayze Field, and now, weekend competition shifts to conference play next week.
The Rebels fell behind 1-0 in the early innings, but a strong outing from lefty Xavier Rivas on the mound kept Purdue at bay for the Rebels to claim a 3-1 lead by the time of his exit after six complete. At the plate, third baseman Ethan Lege led Ole Miss in RBIs with four, and Calvin Harris and TJ McCants joined in that category with one apiece.
Ole Miss fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second inning, but an RBI from Lege knotted the score at one in the bottom half. The Rebels would go on to claim the lead in the bottom of the third, one that they never relinquished en route to the win and sweep.
On the mound, Rivas was relieved by a combination of Matt Parenteau (0.1 IP), JT Quinn (1.0 IP), Sam Tookoian (1.0 IP) and and Mitch Murrell (0.2 IP). Rivas was credited with the win, improving to 4-0 in decisions on the year, and Murrell earned the save.
With the win, Ole Miss improves to 14-2 on the year, and it will next take the field in the midweek at Jacksonville State on Tuesday. It will then hit the road to face the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville to open SEC play on Thursday.
