OXFORD, Miss. -- Football isn't the only sport this year where the Ole Miss Rebels and Mercer Bears will share a connection.

On Tuesday night, Mercer outfielder Treyson Hughes who entered the transfer portal recently committed to the Ole Miss Rebels. Hughes had a record-setting career at Mercer, holding the high mark for single-season runs (74), and he also was named to the 2023 All-Southern Conference First Team by both coaches and media.

"First of all, I want to thank God and all my family for supporting me and putting me on this awesome and incredible journey," Hughes said in his tweet. "With that being said I have decided to continue my academic and athletic career at The University of Mississippi. GO REBS!!"

Last season, Hughes hit a blistering .389 in his sophomore campaign, complete with nine home runs and 48 RBI. The Warner Robins, Ga., native will now bring that capability to Oxford at the plate.

Not to be outdone in the field, Hughes also posted a 1.000 fielding percentage a year ago after a .970 mark in his freshman season of 2022.

Hughes will look to help right the ship at Swayze Field this season after the 2022 national champion Rebels failed to reach the SEC or NCAA Tournaments in 2023. Head coach Mike Bianco, who earned a good bit of emotional capital following the championship run, saw his contract not be rolled over following this season.
