Ole Miss Rebels WR Dayton Wade Reveals How He Received Football Scholarship News in 2023
OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss Rebels wide receiver Dayton Wade is charismatic, both on the field and off.
Wade is known for his fun had during media settings, and that trend didn't change on Monday. The wideout spent last season not on a football scholarship with the Rebels, and once he found out he had earned one for this season, he was obviously elated. It was the source who told him, however, that brought the interesting twist.
It was Knox Kiffin.
“I was doing normal day-to-day stuff, and the next thing you know, I get a phone call saying, ‘Hey, you gotta meet with this person,’" Wade said. "Knox broke the news down to me, like Knox Kiffin, he broke the news to me that I was getting a scholarship. I was like, ‘For real?’ It was for real and definitely a game changer and definitely put me in the position that I’m in today. I’m very thankful for that opportunity.”
Knox is the equally-charismatic son of Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin. Known for his celebrations on the sideline with the team during games (fire extinguisher included), Knox has grown to establish a name for himself in Oxford, and it appears he is now the deliverer of good news to players within the Rebels program.
Wade has made the most of his opportunities this season, too. Against the Vanderbilt Commodores last week, he was the team's leading receiver with eight catches for 120 yards and a score as the Rebels routed Vandy 33-7 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
He may get overshadowed at times by other receivers on the roster, but Wade can play, and he can thank Knox Kiffin for delivering some good motivation to him prior to this campaign.
