History Potentially Awaits Ole Miss Rebels Following Win Over ULM

The Ole Miss Rebels managed to win comfortably on Saturday afternoon, but if they want to make history in 2023, a win on Thursday night will be paramount.
In this story:

It was evident that the No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels were not entirely engaged in the first half on Saturday, but after a 35-3 win over Louisiana-Monroe, the Rebels still have a chance to make history this season.

For starters, Ole Miss has only won 10 regular season games once in program history, and that came in 2021, but there is more on the table than that. Besides a potential New Year's Six bowl berth, the Rebels have a chance to win 11 total games for the first time in school history, should they win the Egg Bowl on Thursday and win the bowl game.

With the difficult schedule that Ole Miss faced entering the season, that's a noteworthy feat, should it come to pass.

Outside of its two losses, Ole Miss has simply found a way to win games on multiple occasions this season, even if the game wasn't pretty. Saturday, although against an admittedly-lesser opponent in ULM, was another testament to that fact. The Rebels had a subpar first half, leading just 7-3 at the intermission, but it rallied to put the Warhawks to bed in the second half, scoring on each of its first three possessions after halftime.

It would have been easy to keep its foot off the gas and play an equally-ugly second half, but Ole Miss managed to right the ship in its final tune-up before the annual Egg Bowl.

Now, even though Mississippi State has not had a banner season in Starkville, there's a lot riding on this game on Thursday. If Ole Miss wants to make it to its second access bowl in three years, it will need a win on Thanksgiving night, and it would have double digit wins for the second time in the Lane Kiffin era.

The Egg Bowl always has emotions involved within the state of Mississippi, but the Rebels can't overlook the Bulldogs this season if they want to make history.

Nine wins are in the books for Kiffin and company, capping off a perfect season at home. Can they make it 10 wins on Thursday night? If so, a date with history awaits this team regardless of its bowl game destination.
