John Macon Gillespie Joins Locked On Ole Miss Podcast to Discuss Rebels Quarterback Competition
Steven Willis of the Locked On Ole Miss Podcast hosted John Macon Gillespie, publisher of The Grove Report, this week to discuss the Ole Miss Rebels' first week of fall camp, including plenty of talk on the quarterback battle.
"I think a lot of people are still focused on quarterbacks," Gillespie said. "Looking at social media, and that's not always a great indicator, people like quarterback talk, regardless of whether there's a competition or not. I think a lot of people already have their minds made up as to who they want, and they're backing that guy."
Willis also mentioned previous Ole Miss quarterback battles, including Matt Corral vs. John Rhys Plumlee, that attracted fans' attention, but he believes that many of the opinions from fans this season are not centered on Jaxson Dart vs. Spencer Sanders. Instead, it's divided between pro-Jaxson Dart and anti-Jaxson Dart, regardless of who the other option is.
"The quarterback competitions you mentioned in recent memory, most people who did some digging understood how those were probably going to come out," Gillespie said. "I think people were either pro-Jaxson Dart or anti-Jaxson Dart at the end of the season last year, not taking into account any development that may have happened. I think people are sticking to their guns, and I may be guilty of that myself.
"To me, Jaxson Dart wasn't bad. I think he progressed as the season went on last year, and I think he's progressed more this offseason. It feels like either 'I want Jaxson Dart' or 'I want anyone other than Jaxson Dart.'"
Gillespie and Willis also discussed conference realignment topics, Ayden Williams and other topics on this edition of the show. You can watch the entire episode at the link at the top of this story.
