Lane Kiffin Apologizes For 'Letting Down' Ole Miss Fans in Alabama Loss
The Ole Miss Rebels felt like they had their first true chance at beating the Alabama Crimson Tide since their upset victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium in 2015.
Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin was quick to take the blame for Saturday’s performance, taking an apology to Twitter.
“Sorry to let you guys down. We blew that one! Came to win and didn’t get it done. Put it on me, not our players.”
The apology tweet was later deleted and when he was asked what he meant by his statement during Sunday’s press conference, he clarified.
"I think nowadays I get very concerned with social media about how much these players get attacked. And I get really concerned because they’re on these phones all day long and sitting on the bus back (from the game) and all that. I’ll say this, when things for some reason (get said) on social media, people tend to listen to it a lot more, when in reality, all they are is the same things when you’re walking out of a stadium that the fans yell."
Prior to Saturday’s game, coach Kiffin disparaged Alabama defensive coordinator, Kevin Steele, saying he was the one making the play calls for the Crimson Tide during their Week 3 struggles against an unranked Southern Florida.
He did not stop there. The morning before kickoff, Kiffin was engaging at the fact that, “Maybe this is our last time,” to beat Alabama under head coach Nick Saban. Was he hinting at a Saban retirement developed by an Ole Miss win?
What is evident is that Lane Kiffin poked the bear one last time, and now moves to 0-5 in his career against Nick Saban in what he believed was his final opportunity to edge his former coaching associate.
