Lane Kiffin Provides Update On Spencer Sanders Injury, Quarterback Competition
NASHVILLE -- The Ole Miss Rebels quarterback room is among the deepest in college football, and one of the signal callers in that room is reportedly back at 100 percent entering fall camp.
Spencer Sanders, a transfer addition to the Rebels roster from the Oklahoma State Cowboys this offseason, was not fully healthy during spring practice, but Kiffin stated that he is now back to full speed in late July, according to David Eckert of The Clarion Ledger.
"We're excited about that because he was not 100% during spring," Kiffin said Thursday at SEC Media Days.
Kiffin was non-committal when asked about the competition itself between Sanders, incumbent starter Jaxson Dart and transfer Walker Howard.
"It's a really competitive room," Kiffin said. "And it's in much better shape, which is our goal as a staff for an entire roster, each position group to try to make them more competitive and more balanced throughout.
"That room is by far the best it's been since I've been here, so we're excited about camp coming up to see these guys fully healthy."
Kiffin, however, also fielded some questions on SEC Now following his time at the podium, and he opened up a bit more about what he is looking for at quarterback. It may be unwise to read too much into his comments, but he did make a point to mention that Dart is entering his second year at Ole Miss.
"Taking care of the ball," Kiffin said. "We did some really good things last year, but as a team, we didn't take care of the ball, and a lot of it has to do with that position. Improving on that and the leadership as [Dart] goes into year two. The other quarterbacks are going into year one with us.
"That's hard. People think a quarterback is supposed to go in and it's supposed to go great. That's a challenge for first-year guys. Luckily, Jaxson is going into his second year."
