Former Ole Miss safety CJ Moore made headlines Friday morning for all the wrong reasons.

Moore, along with three other Detroit Lions, were among five players leaguewide to be suspended for violating the NFL's gambling policy after an investigation by the league. Moore, receiver Quintez Cephus and Washington Commanders defensive lineman Shaka Toney, were suspended indefinitely.

Lions receiver and former first-round pick Jameson Williams, along with second-year receiver Stanley Berryhill, were suspended for six regular-season games for mobile betting on games that occurred at the Lions' Allen Park facility. Williams and Berryhill did not receive indefinite suspensions due to their bets being on non-NFL games.

Moore and Cephus were released by the Lions Friday morning following the news. Both players can apply for reinstatement following the conclusion of the 2023 season.

"These players exhibited decision-making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules," Lions Executive Vice President and General Manager Brad Holmes said in a statement. "We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately. We are disappointed by the decision-making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward."

A two-year starter for the Rebels, Moore played in 42 games during his four seasons in Oxford. He totaled 96 tackles, 11 pass deflections and four interceptions from 2014-18

Undrafted in 2019, Moore signed with the Lions and spent three seasons on the active roster. His best season came in 2021 when he recorded a career-high 22 tackles and an interception in 17 games.

Moore was waived at the start of the regular season by Detroit but re-signed a month later from the Houston Texans practice squad. This offseason, the 27-year-old agreed to terms on a two-year extension to remain with the Lions through the 2024 season.
