Ex Ole Miss Rebels QB Matt Corral Shines in First Start for UFL's Birmingham Stallions
Former Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Matt Corral had himself a day on Saturday.
In the inaugural game of the new United Football League - the product of a merger of the USFL and XFL - the Birmingham Stallions mounted a comeback for an impressive 27-14 win over the Arlington Renegades at Choctaw Stadium on Saturday.
After a slow start out of the gate and falling behind 11-3 early, Corral and the Stallions scored on three of their final five possessions to put the game away. The ex-Rebel threw for 201 yards on 12-of-21 passing, one touchdown and one interception. Corral added 25 yards on the ground on four carries.
Birmingham dominated the rushing game with 183 total yards on 36 carries compared to Arlington's 18 carries and 59 yards. C.J. Marable led the way for the Stallions with 67 yards on 18 carries while Adrian Martinez chipped in 52 yards on three rushes.
Corral takes over under center for Alex McGough who started for the Stallions last season, and was one of the two huge additions to the team for 2024 alongside former Green Bay Packers 2021 third-round pick Amari Rodgers.
The Stallions, led by head coach Skip Holtz, dominated the old USFL over the past two seasons with a combined record of 21-3 and two championships in the two seasons of existence before the merger with the XFL.
Next up for Corral and the Stallions are the Michigan Panthers at Ford Field in Detroit at 11 a.m. CT on April 7 on ESPN.
