'I Can Play Fast!' Ole Miss Rebels CB Trey Amos Praises Pete Golding's Defense
OXFORD, Miss. – There is a ton of new defensive talent walking the practice fields for the Ole Miss Rebels this spring. Ole Miss coaches Lane Kiffin and Pete Golding scoured the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason for pieces who could potentially elevate their roster to a championship contender.
The Ole Miss cornerbacks room was a group that was thoroughly addressed, as the Rebels lost both of their top two corners from 2023 to the NFL Draft.
Former Alabama Crimson Tide cornerback Trey Amos was one of the most sought-after players at his position in the portal, but he committed to Ole Miss in January and has since turned heads during spring practices while covering receivers like Tre Harris.
On Tuesday, Amos was free after practice to speak with the local Oxford media and explained his decision to transfer from Alabama to Ole Miss after just one season with the Crimson Tide.
“When the news broke about coach [Nick] Saban leaving, I had doubts like anybody else would,” Amos told reporters. “I ended up making the decision [to enter the portal] based on myself and my family. Once I entered the transfer portal, I started to choose where I would fit best and be comfortable. I chose Ole Miss because it’s pretty much the same system [as Alabama], but simpler, so I can play fast and just try to make plays.”
Amos spent the first three years of his collegiate career playing for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns where he recorded 59 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception, and 13 pass breakups. In his first season in the SEC (2023), the New Iberia, La., native registered 12 total tackles, 0.5 TFLs, and five passes defended.
Amos arrived in Tuscaloosa after Golding was hired by Ole Miss to take over as defensive coordinator but revealed that Nick Saban’s former assistant tried to make him a Rebel the first time he entered the portal.
“My first time being in the transfer portal, I was talking to coach Pete Golding,” Amos said. “We had a lot of talks – he always gives me backlash about how I should’ve picked [Ole Miss] first. We always clown about that. But other than that, he’s a great coach. He wants to do the most for the team.”
Fans will get a chance to see Amos and the other Rebel newcomers on held on Saturday, April 13 when the team holds its annual spring game, The Grove Bowl. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. CT, and the game will be held in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
