Patriots Secure Former Panthers QB Matt Corral off Waivers
In the 2022 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers made a trade with the New England Patriots in the third round where they went on to select former Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Matt Corral. Today, the Patriots have secured him off waivers just a day after being released by the Panthers.
Carolina drafted Corral 94th overall, but he was sidelined with preseason foot injury that handicapped him for the 2022 season. As the Panthers did not see Corral as an immediate impact due to the injury, general manager Scott Fitterer will not be getting his wish of adding him back to the roster.
"It was a tough decision," he said. "I like Matt as a person. Any time you have a guy that you take and bring in and you're developing and you see progress- it's tough."
Corral accompanies former SEC quarterback Mac Jones on the newly-decided 53-man roster. This will be Corral’s first time back in New England since his 2022 preseason campaign was cut short due to a Lisfranc injury during a game at Gillette Stadium.
During his time at Ole Miss, Corral lead the Rebels to their first 10-win regular season in 2021, earning them a spot in the Sugar Bowl. Over his four-year career in Oxford, he threw 57 career touchdowns for 8,287 yards while rushing for 18 TDs and 1,338 yards on the ground.
