SEC Coach Gives Honest Opinion About Rebels' Lane Kiffin, Transfer Portal Mentality

What do some anonymous coaches around the conference think about Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss for 2023?
In this story:

OXFORD, Miss. -- Is the transfer portal an apt method of roster building? Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels have certainly utilized it heavily in recent seasons, and the country is taking notice.

In Athlon Sports' print edition of their 2023 season preview, anonymous SEC coaches sounded off about what they thought of one another and their respective programs. When time came to talk about Lane Kiffin, here's what one coach had to say:

"Lane [Kiffin] wins games he's not supposed to. He's good, good enough to make things happen in years where they don't have obvious talent at the right positions. He's honestly one of the five best play-callers in the history of the game, he's really that good. He's also crazy inconsistent as a head coach. ... This is a portal team, 110 percent. Maybe they can se the culture from the very top down and not fall into the trap other teams do with that mentality."

Will the transfer portal pay off for Ole Miss? In short, it might, but the Rebels have also hit the prep recruiting trail very hard lately. For this season, however, it's worth noting that the three-way quarterback race in Oxford features three men who began their careers at different schools.

Someone in that race will win the starting job, and that's not to mention the heavy focus on the portal in other areas of the roster.
