Can 'All-Around Talented' TE Michael Trigg Be Impact Player for Ole Miss in 2023?
For the second season in a row, Ole Miss Rebels tight end Michael Trigg has shown out in his team's spring game.
On Saturday, the 6-3, 240 frame hauled in nine catches for 138 yards and a score, and he seemed to have a special chemistry with quarterback Spencer Sanders. He also, understandably, has chemistry with reigning starting quarterback Jaxson Dart as the two came as a "package deal" out of the transfer portal from the USC Trojans last year.
To put it in perspective, in an injury-hampered 2022 season, Trigg hauled in 17 passes for 156 yards in seven games played. How much of this spring success can be translated to the fall? Or, is it just that: spring success?
Trigg's primary quarterback on Saturday was the aforementioned Sanders, a transfer in his own right from the Oklahoma State Cowboys. While Sanders is learning Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weis Jr.'s offense, he seems to have developed a special chemistry with this receiver in particular.
"If you were me, would you throw it to Trigg? Figured," Sanders said with a laugh in media availability on Saturday. "That's an all-around talented guy, right there. He's a helluva player. He can make plays that you don't think anybody could make.
"Awesome football player, and he's a great person as well. Building that chemistry, I want to build it the best I can."
Trigg certainly has the tools. Frame aside, he has strong hands and seems to have taken more initiative in run blocking this offseason. But can that translate to the field this fall?
The Rebels will be relying on Trigg in a new-look tight end room this season, but if he has chemistry with the quarterbacks, he could take a step forward in his second year in Oxford.
